Not a great many people know who Rene Gruau is, but his works were influential to his sidekick, designer Christian Dior.

The youngster born to an Italian father and French mother in 1909 loved art, and had dreams of becoming an architect. When only 19, Rene was accepted to Lidel, a famous Italian magazine, where he became established as an illustrator, his works showing women’s elegance and polished beauty. “The World of Rene Gruau 1910-2004” takes to the stage in Ginoza Village starting September 20th.

Following World War II, when he was 37, Rene united with his best friend Christian Dior and was formally designated the bland illustrator for Dior. Many of his works surprised people by their adventurous composition and touch, extracting an even greater level of charm. As his advertising’s mainstream moved from illustrations to photography, Rene remained energetic as an illustrator until his death in 2004.

As part of the September 20th ~ October 8th Works of an Advertisement Designer of Paris: Christian Dior in the 1950’s art exhibition at the Garamand Hall in Ginoza Village Culture Center, a chanson concert of chanson singer Sublime fills the evening September 22nd.

Sublime originally debuted in 1978 as a cabaret singer, starting as a street performer with a barrel organist in Tokyo. Sublime lived in Japan 1985~1994, meeting trumpet player Jun Miyake and accordionist Coba while in the Asian nation. She united the two composers, and built her own original music repertory. Songs Sublime sings became topics of talks, and now appear in the composers’ album.

Admission to the France Art Exhibition “The World of Rene Gruau 1910-2004” is free. The exhibition shows 10 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. ~ 7 p.m. on weekends. Organizers regret that they can’t provide English language guides to the exhibition.
