OIST steps forward with new programs

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University is moving ahead with new science and technology program.

The new university programs at the Tancha district of Onna Village school were launched this past week, marking the official start f business at the OIST. The school is staging its enrollment ceremonies for 34 students from 18 countries today, with lectures to begin next week.

Research is broken into five broad categories such as molecular, cell and developmental biology, mathematics and computational science, environment and bionomics, physical science and chemistry. Officials say the interdisciplinary research is not limited to the framework of areas or research. OIST says it’s shooting for development as the center of its networks with scientists from around the world, drawing upon industrialization of research results by cooperating with the world’s top universities, research institutions and enterprises.

There are currently 260 researchers at OIST, with 120 of them foreigners coming to grips with the world’s leading edge research. Only five-year integrated doctoral programs are available. All education and research is conducted in English.
