A  light truck hit a 49-year-old construction worker walking on a road on Iriomote Island, Oct. 26.

The victim was taken by a helicopter to a hospital in Ishigaki City, where he stays unconscious wit serious injuries, including a fractured skull and ruptured kidneys. The 58-year-old driver of the truc was not injured.

According to Yaeyama police, the driver says he noticed the man walking close to the center of the one-way road. He claims the man then suddenly turned in front of him as he had moved to the side to avoid the man, so there was not time to avoid the accident.

Yaeyama Police are investigating the cause of the accident on suspicion that the driver failed to look ahead properly.
