Tomigusuku arsonist held

Tomigusuku Police arrested an unemployed 55-year-old man on suspicion of arson of an inhabited structure because the man had set fire to his room in an apartment building in Tomigusuku City, Nov. 2.

The fire totally destroyed the man’s room, but no one was injured and the fire did not spread into other rooms.

The man has confessed to the charge saying “I set the fire because I got sick and tired of everything.”  However, Tomigusuku Police are conducting a thorough investigation because according to investigators there is reason to suspect tat the man’s mental condition was not stable, and he thus would not be criminally responsible. They say the man had showed strange behavior and speech before the incident.

The arrest charge is that the man tried to burn the apartment by building setting the bedding ablaze with a lighter in his room on the first floor of the three-story concrete building in the late evening of Nov. 1.

The fire was extinguished after 40 minutes.

According to the police, the man was sitting down in front of the building when the fire was discovered, and he had a lighter in his hand.
