Season begins with 7th Okinawan Drum Festival

A dozen Eisa organizations, beefed up with a couple of street prformers groups, will show their newest stuff in Naha Civic Hall on Jun. 30, when they kick of the summer season.

Let the Eisa festivities begin; it’s summer in Okinawa.

The 7th Okinawan Drum Festival kicks off the season at Naha Civic Hall Sunday, June 30, with nearly a dozen Eisa organizations participating.  Doors will open at noon, and performances begin at 1 p.m.  Admission is only ¥500, with all seats non-reserved.  Naha Civic Hall is located at 1-2-1 Yorimiya in Naha City.  Parking’s not possible at Naha Civic Hall, but there is a pay parking lot nearby at Red Cross Hospital where there’s space for about 400 cars on the opposite side of the Civic Hall.

At least ten Eisa organizations, which work both inside and outside of Okinawa Prefecture, such as Naha Taiko, Eisa-Crew CROWN, Uehara Taiko, Kanagusuku Taiko Meeting, etc., will compete for Eisa each group created on their own.  The Ryukyu street dance crew “WHO’S NEXT” is slated to appear as a special guest.

In order to accent the street scene of Okinawa Prefecture, four performers who play active roles within the prefecture will join together, and then concentrate the team, WHO’S NEXT. The four organizations such as “JJ” which is the pioneer of the freestyle basketball, which became No.1 in Japan in 2007, “STARS. ENTERTAINMENT” the freestyle basketball team ranked No.1 in 2012, the team of the pioneer of the freestyle football in Okinawa, and a human beat boxer T.K., will perform an incredible show at the event.
