A male tourist diving off a beach of Iriomote Island fell unconscious for an unknown reason, Monday afternoon. He was taken to a doctor’s office where he was confirmed dead about one and half hours later.

Ishigaki Coast Guard identified the man as 52-year-old Masahiro Sashida from Kasugabe City, Saitama Prefecture.

According to investigators, Sashida had gone diving with another tourist and a dive instructor. After all three had descended to the depth of 10 meters, the instructor noticed that Sashida had problems with his dive, and the instructor took him to the surface. However, Sashida vomited and fell unconscious, and the instructor alerted others to take him to the nearest doctor’s office, where he died.
