Expo Park Summer Festival lights skies Saturday

Some 10,000 fireworks will lit the skies at Okinawa’s largest fireworks festival in Motobu’s Expo Park on Saturday.

Emerald Beach on Ocean Expo Park is the venue Saturday for the 35th Ocean Expo Park Summer Festival, a one-day event that has become Okinawa’s greatest fireworks festival.

Live performances entertain visitors to the Expo Park Summer Festival from 4 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free to the Ocean Expo Park Summer Festival, which runs noon to 9 p.m. Saturday at Ocean Expo Park, in Motobu. Parts of the festival take place in the park’s hall, and because it is dark, organizers recommend visitors bring along flashlights.

Last year’s festival drew more than 48,000 people to enjoy the day. The festival includes about 10,000 fireworks, which makes it the largest fireworks show on Okinawa. The fireworks begin launching at 8 p.m., and the large fire flowers spew beautifully powerful blooms across the night sky for an hour, except a brief pause halfway to reload the fireworks tubes. Apart from the fireworks, a series of events and programs, including “beach attractions” and the “Sunset Concert”, will take place.

“Golden Hour” currently broadcast on FM Okinawa will take an official trip, and it will broadcast live, and will act as the host of the Sunset Concert. The beach attractions begin at noon, with activities kids always enjoy, such as a dolphin slider, a water pistol battle, water balloon darts, and kids’ sandbox play.

Beach attractions entertain visitors from noon to 6 p.m., with the Sunset Concert running 4 ~ 8 p.m.  FM Okinawa will broadcast the concert live.  Artists include Junko Yagami, Ryuichi Kawamura, Lady Go, Haruka, UEBO, green note coaster, and more!!! The giant fireworks spectacular runs from 8 p.m.

Although there is free parking for about 3000 cars, traffic restrictions will be also implemented, although organizers predict some confusion can be expected on festival day. Route 114 will have restrictions as all vehicles will be restricted from Kakinouchi intersection to the intersection adjacent to the fireworks site from 7:30 p.m. ~ 11 p.m.  All vehicles will be restricted on Route 114 from Urasaki intersection to the intersection adjacent to the fireworks site from 8 p.m. ~ 11 p.m.  From 8:20 p.m. to 11 p.m., a section of Route 114 will be one way, starting from the intersection adjacent to the fireworks site and ending at Urasaki intersection.

All vehicles will be restricted on Town Road 16 from Yamachan-bento to the three-way intersection joined by Route 114, except for Toyokawa residents and visitors to local commercial facilities, from 7 p.m. to Midnight. Route 505 will have no restrictions, and traffic will flow in both directions.
