Family style activities fill 30th Unna Festival

Eisa and other traditional Okinawan entertainment is a big part of Unna Festival.

The 30th annual Unna Festival is little more than a week away, and Onna Village organizers are putting the finishing touches on a fun-filled two days of events and activities.

The annual festival takes place Saturday, July 27th and Sunday, July 28th at the Onna Village Community Space.  Admission is free for the festivities, which run 9 a.m. ~ 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. ~ 9:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Fireworks mark the end of the revelry on both days of the festival.

This summer festival includes a fireworks display, a beach dodge ball convention, glass boat sightseeing, the Onna-mura youth Eisa, Yoshimoto Okinawa live comedy show, the children’s snatching-off competition of fish and fruit, Ryujin Mabyer show, and a space science technical exhibition as main events. Fireworks displays cap festival activities on both days.

Parking is not available near the festival site.  The Onna Village parking lot is near the Comprehensive Health Care Service Welfare Center, and a shuttle bus will operate frequently to the festival site.

The program gets under way the 27th with a Beach dodge ball competition at 9 a.m., followed at 10 a.m. by the space science technical exhibition by JAXA that runs all day.  The Glass Boat sightseeing starts at noon, and a special sale on beef soup kicks off at 1 p.m.  There will be products exhibitions made by elementary and junior high school students from 2 p.m. ~ 7 p.m. Special products from friendship cities exhibition and sale begin at 3 p.m., just ahead of opening ceremonies.  The fish and fruits grabbing contest is at 4 p.m.

The Boogie Woogie Band is live at 5:05 p.m., followed by Kazuyuki Nashiro, Onna Village and Kibi Chuo Town entertainment.  Youth eisa runs through the evening, finishing in time for the 9 p.m. fireworks.

Sunday activities begin at 10 a.m. with Glass Boat sightseeing.  Also at 10 a.m. are a space science technical exhibition by JAXA, products exhibitions by school children and a kindergartener fairy tale contest.  Look for more soup sales at noon, followed at 2 p.m. by special products sales from friendship cities.  The fish and fruits grapping contest is at 3 p.m., followed by the Ryukyu song award prize and Mr. Jokeman live. The Onna Village Karaoke Contest runs throughout the afternoon, with a lottery at 5:45 p.m. and Toururuten live at 6:10 p.m.  Prism and Chikako Sawada are live in the evening, followed by the grand fireworks finale at 9 p.m.
