Jimmy Onishi Exhibition ~ Challenging & Innovative

Jimmy Onishi introduces one of his colorful works,

A colorful art exhibition is now under way at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum, presenting Jimmy Onishi’s “Challenging & Innovations.”

Onishi’s talent is not limited to paintings only, and many are done in collaboration with children.

The exhibition, which opened last week and runs through September 1st, is open daily 9 a.m. ~ 6 p.m., with last entry at 5:30 p.m. Advance general admission for adults is ¥640, or ¥800 at the door. The group rate is ¥640 per head. College and high school students advance tickets are ¥480 or ¥600 at the door, while elementary and junior high school students pay only ¥320 in advance or ¥400 at the door.

Jimmy Onishi is a Japanese painter who is called “the magician of colors”, and his works are full of the energy produced from rare color sense. He is very popular not only inside Japan, but overseas. In this exhibition, about 120 works are exhibited from an old masterpiece to the latest work centering on the picture-book original picture used as rollout. This is an exhibition, at which a visitor can admire his various creative works such as pictures and design drawings that showcase his free way of thinking.

Jimmy Onishi was born in 1964 in Osaka. Although he gained popularity as a protégé-talent of Yoshimoto Kogyo, a Japanese entertainment company, he retired from the entertainment in 1996, and turned his career into drawing. He has created a solid stream of works, and collaborated often with children. In 1999, he was awarded the Prize for Cultural Merit from the Para State Government of Brazil.
