Okinawa has eighth most centenarians in Japan

Okinawa Prefecture Welfare Division announced that there are currently 923 elderly citizens aged over 100 years or more living in the prefecture. That is 42 more than last year.

Although the count has increased, nationally Okinawa has gone from the 5th to the 8th place on the list. The prefecture with most elderly citizens over the age of 100 is Shimane.

With the birth rate in Japan still declining, it’s anticipated that in the future, one out of five citizens of Japan will be aged 65 or more.
