Paintings of Ryukyu beauties on exhibition

Exhibition at Hiyamikachi Machiguwa Museum in Naha displays 29 paintings from Meiji and Taiso eras depicting beautiful Ryukyu women as this “Ryukyu Woman” by Kankou Yagani (Seikivhi Isa).

An exhibition focusing mostly on paintings by Okinawan born artists of the Meiji and Taisho era (1868 ~ 1926), is currently open through Saturday in Hiyamikachi Machiguwa Museum in Naha.

Among others the exhibition displays works by Seiji Gushiken and Koukan Yanagi who concentrated on displaying beautiful Okinawan women on their canvasses. Most of the paintings are from the era before WWII. The exhibition consists of 20 painting and wall scrolls.

The exhibition is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Hiyamikachi Machiguwa Museum is located in Makishi, Naha City, on the second floor of the Heiwa Dori clothing section. Admission to the exhibition is free.
