Shikina Shrine to get dragon heads for originality

One of Okinawa’s eight major shrines, Shikina Shrine (Shikina-miya) in Hantagawa, Naha City started reconstruction work on its structure, Nov. 6th.

The purpose of the reconstruction project is to place a 1.5-meter-long dragon head on each corner of the shrine’s roof. It is not common for dragon heads to be placed on shrine roofs, but Shikina Shrine’s chief priest Yoshio Arakaki stated, “The motive for our undertaking is to give a taste of originality to our shrine”.

The reconstruction s scheduled to be completed by the end of November. The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 8.
