Children learn basics of pottery hands-on in Tsuboya.

Approximately 300 years ago, the Ryukyu Administration gathered the many pottery skills and artists from all over Okinawa and set them up in the Tsuboya district of Naha City.

The Tsuboya event also features traditional dances by local youth groups.

On Sunday and Monday, the artisans from Tsuboya are paying homage to their heritage with the 9^th Tsuboya Yachimun Street Festival.  The free festival runs 10 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. on Sunday, and 10:30 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. on Monday.  Everything takes place on Tsuboya Yachimun Street in Naha City.

Today, Tsuboya remains known as a pottery town and the Tsuboya street is still preserved with some 20 workshops, stores and galleries. At this 9th Tsuboya Yachimun Street Festival, there will be pieces from the Ryukyu Kingdom Era to the modern day, not only of

Okinawa but also arts and crafts will be on display from all over.

The traditional goods will be on sale, and visitors can take in not only pottery, but can experience the challenges of hand-making leather crafts, too. Of course there will be food, and visitors may want to try some dishes served in the handmade pottery; it may just give it a new taste to it.

Even after the festival finishes, Tsuboya Street remains open for visitors to come and see the pieces on display until Nov. 17^th at Naha City Tsuboya Pottery Museum 4rd floor. Entrance is free.
