First fruit and vegetable auction of 2014 held

The Okinawa Wholesale Market in Inanse, Urasoe City, held its first fruit and vegetable auction of 2014, Jan. 5.

Due to slow growth caused by bad weather, the quantity of vegetables and fruits on the market has severely declined. The shortage of kidney beans, bitter gourd (goya) and cucumbers have led to price increases with the average price per kg of those vegetables that has been 200~220 yen, going up to 248 yen level.

The total quantity of vegetables and fruits handled on the wholesale market has dropped 24%. Also due to the sudden drop in temperatures last November, the growth of vegetables and fruits has fallen behind. If the weather conditions return to normal, producers expect prices to return to average levels from now on.
