The Okinawa Prefecture Tourism Policy Division announced Monday, the new statistics on the number of visitors to the prefecture during 2013.

Citing the expansion of flight routes, increasing number of low cost carriers and low yen rate, officials at the division said that travel demand has increased resulting in a 9.9% increase in arrivals from a year before.

According to the official count, a total of 6.14 million tourists visited the prefecture in 2013 marking the highest number ever be recorded.

Up to now, the 2008 saw the highest number of visitors when the count was just over 6 million.
