1% of Ryukyu University students have experienced DUI

One percent of university students have driven under influence at least once in their lifetime, according to a survey published on Thursday.

Professor Kazushige Shimizu from the University of the Ryukyus’ Faculty of Law and Letters conducted the survey among 500 students in the university in 2012, and found that one percent of the surveyed students admitted having experienced driving under the influence.

Publishing the results, Shimizu said that of those, who answered they had not, there could be a high possibility that the majority had experienced driving under the influence nevertheless. Shimizu stated, “Although they are aware that the rules and enforcement against DUI is strict, and punishment severe, they may have been doing it without knowing they still have alcohol is still in their system.”
