The largest shopping mall complex in Okinawa now under construction at the former Awase Golf Course site in Kitanakagusuku is to be called AEON Mall Okinawa Rycom according to an AEON spokesman, The company made the name official Thursday.

The mall is scheduled to open in spring 2015. The site of the mall covers some 175,000 square meters. The total floor and parking space area will be 100,000 sq.m. making it one of the largest facilities of any kind in Okinawa. In addition to the AEON shopping mall and adjacent parking facilities the complex will have an ANA resort hotel and other leisure facilities incorporated in it.

dumbest use of prime real estate ever conceived on this congested island. #1 island industry is tourism…ever heard of a water park/amusement park? Instead, let’s build a THIRD Jusco, lol.

Just FYI, this is replacing the Jusco in Chatan (at least from what I’ve heard from other business owners here). I’m not sure what’s going to take the place of that one, but this new one is going to be much bigger and better (nicer movie theater too…can’t watch a movie at the one in Chatan without hearing punks in their crappy loud Skylines or whatever or bosozoku outside).

Also, the reasons we don’t have any water parks (aside from the water slides at Comprehensive Park) or amusement parks is because of our location. The cost to maintain those sorts of attractions here (being on an island, rust is a big problem and then there’s typhoons) make it a waste of money. Even if they were to build an amusement park here, it wouldn’t compare to ones elsewhere (where would they build it? even the former Awase Meadows is too small an area) and no one would come here just for that anyway.

Last thing, this new mall as well as all the new road construction is all part of a larger plan to increase tourism to different parts of the island. I’m not sure how long you’ve been here, but it used to be a huge pain the ass to get from one side of the island to the other. It’s much better now and will continue to get better as these new roads are finished.
