A decision has not been made on the use of Shimoji Airport and surrounding land of some 550 hectares after the fiscal 2015. The airport, located on Shimoji Island, a part of Miyakojima City, was originally designed and used as a training base by Japanese commercial airlines, but their use of the airport has declined to almost nil. Commercial flights to and from the airport were suspended in 1994.

Okinawa Prefecture officials announced on May 13th that they would to accept plans for the land from companies both in and out of Japan. Applications are accepted starting this fall.
