Artisan turns trash cardboard into works of art

On man’s trash is someone else’s material for art. An exhibition at D & Depart-ment Okinawa by Okinawa Standard running through Jun. 24th aims to illustrate how everyday refuse can be utilized and even turned into works of art.

Artist Chouryu Gima likes to make things out of nothing. Well, he likes to transform garbage, especially used paper items such as cardboard boxes and trash into works of art.

A wall made of cardboard boxes can tell an interesting story.

He’s showing off his talents at D & Department Okinawa by Okinawa Standard, located at http://goo.gl/maps/qkl14 through June 24th.  The exhibition runs daily except Wednesday’s, 11:30 a.m. ~ 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Cardboard boxes are always thrown away as garbage. That was until artist rubodan came along.  This is an opportunity to enjoy the rubodan stationary where notebooks, postcards, stickers are made from cardboard boxes. It is made by a process called simple paper made, which any one can easily do.

On June 7th there will be a workshop with a representative of rubodan, artist Chouryu Gima, to actually use the simple paper made process and make a mini notebook. Participation fee is ¥300 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. From 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. there will also be a talk from artist Chouryu Gima, free of charge.

D&DEPARTMENT OKINAWA by OKINAWA STANDARD is located just across the street from the former Futenma military housing area near the new U.S. military hospital.
