The Tomigusuku City mayoral election had to be postponed by one week due to typhoon Vongfong, and the voting took place yesterday with the ballots counted on the same day.

The incumbent Haruki Gibo won the race and retained his seat for the second term.  Gibo won the election with 13,170 votes, while his opponent, Katsunaga Oshiro, managed to gather 2,699 votes less than Gibo.  The turnout in the election was 53.46% of eligible voters, which is 1.48 points higher than the last election’s 51.98% in 2010.

Gibo made his case on his experience and achievements as a mayor for the past four years, and his youth being only 46 years of age.  He made parental care and education as his priority issue in the election.  The message resonated and consequently, Gibo acquired the support of a wide range of voters especially among young people.  After he was declared the winner, he said, “I have worked hard to think first of the welfare of people of Tomigusuku, and I’m very happy to have gained their support and understanding. It was a hard election race, and now I will try my best to realize my election promises.”
