Drunk U.S. sailor beats, robs taxi driver in Chatan

Okinawa City Police arrested a 34-year-old U.S. Navy sailor stationed on Guam on suspicion of robbing a taxi in Chatan, Saturday.

According to police, U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Joshua Lewis is suspected of punching a taxi driver’s on the face several times and running away without paying a fare of ¥1,820 for riding the taxi from Okinawa City to a parking area in Kuwae, Chatan Town, about 7 a.m. on Aug. 29th.

Investigators say, Lewis got out of the taxi, and punched the driver on the face when the taxi stopped on a restaurant parking lot. Lewis then fled the scene on foot, and the taxi driver called police on his cell phone.

A police patrol found Lewis on another parking lot a few hundred meters away and arrested him. At the time of his arrest, Lewis was not able to answer police questions clearly because he was too drunk. Questioned later in police custody, he has reportedly not admitted to the charges.
