A slick of heavy oil was found Aug. 14th off the coast of Awase, Okinawa City.

The 500-meter wide oil slick has been confirmed originating from Tokyo Dai-ichi Hotel Okinawa Grand Mer Resort in Yogi, Okinawa City.

According to officials at the hotel, About 40 to 50 liters of heavy oil leaked from a pipe in the hotel that broke in the evening of Aug. 13th. The pipe delivers oil to a boiler in the hotel. They explain that the oil from the leak went into an underground water storage tank and caused a drainage pump to malfunction.
