The sad fate of stray cats and dogs on Okinawa is that they end up killed by the thousands every year as the only means to control their numbers. Although there are many organizations and individuals working for a solution, the problem persists.

Mofu Mofu Festival is a charity event that is organized for the second time. Its organizers pledge to donate participating stores’ stall fees and a portion of the sales at the event to groups working to save stray animals.

The first festival was a big success, and organizers were able to collect a total of ¥148,638, which was donated to two NPO groups. One was ‘Wan’s Partners’ that tackles the problem of disposition by slaughter of stray animals on Okinawa, and the other, ‘Cherubim’, is a group working to find foster owners for the caught animals.

At the festival, Wan’s Partners’ foster owners will have a special event from 11:00 to 14:00. Bands jujumo and Orkestar de Viccos will entertain with live music performances from 14:45.

Shops at the festival sell T-shirts, wood goods, crafts, books, hand-made soap, candles, additive-free snacks for dogs, pottery, fabrics and much more. The food stalls include, among others, a vegan food café, coffee shop, vegan pastry store, gelato shop, and bakery.

The Mofu Mofu Festival will take place on Tuesday, Sep. 22nd, that is a Japanese national holiday in the middle of so called “Silver Week.” The event will be cancelled in case of inclement weather. The event runs from 11:00 to 17:00 at Nigiwai Hiroba in Naha City; 2-7-10, Matsuo, Naha City (https://goo.gl/KzwRQT). Admission to the event is free.
