Okinawan youth selected for national U16 basketball team

16-year-old Reo Shimajiri from Okinawa was selected to the national basketball team representing Japan in the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championships scheduled for Oct. 29 through Nov. 7th in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The U16 games are for players who are 16 years of age or younger, and Shimijiri is the first youth from Okinawa ever selected for the 12-member team.

Shimajiri, who joined the team training camp Friday, is a second-grade student at Konan Senior High School in Naha City. He is 187 cm tall and weighs 77 kg,. He plays the position of forward. His coach says he is good at quick switches between offense and defense, and aggressive in inside play.

He has previous participated six times in training camps for selecting national team members, and now finally qualified for the team.
