The ‘Relay for Life’ is a 24-hour charity event that takes place from noon on Nov. 14th to noon on Nov. 15th at Tedako Hall and Park in Urasoe City Culture Park. It’s held to support cancer patients and cancer research.

‘Relay for Life’ itself started in 1985 in the U.S. when, in an effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, a doctor ran 24 hours to emphasize a thought that cancer patients face their own cancer 24 hours a day. Today, it is not just a fundraising event any more but has developed into an occasion to develop a sense of togetherness within a society to fight cancer.

During the 24-hour walk, Eisa, dance, music and drum performances are on stage.

In 2015, the event has been organized in about 6,000 locations in 25 counties around the world. In Japan, the first ‘Relay for Life’ took place in Ibaraki Prefecture in 2006. Last year, the event was held in 43 places throughout the country. So far, it has been held four times in Okinawa including the first event in 2009 in Chatan Town.

The event consists of a 24-hour relay walk, a lecture about medication and early detection of cancers, and an exhibition corner and candle lightning ceremony to commemorate people who passed away because of cancer.

In addition, there will be music, dance, Eisa and drum performances on stage. Everyone can join in the relay walk either as an individual or a group with friends and family, or just come to enjoy the event without walking.

Admission to the event is ¥1,000 for adults, which will be entirely donated to the Japan Cancer Society. Cancer survivors, cancer patients and children of high school age and under can enter free.
