Residents of the Shirahama area of Ogimi Village by the Shioya Bay started the Candle Night event in 2011 to promote conserving of the natural environment and Shirahama area.

4,000 lanterns decorate the shoreline of Shioya Bay.

This Saturday night, residents of the area light up 4,000 hand-made candles that are made from the recycled candles collected from wedding ceremonies and receptions at local hotels. The candles are placed in PET bottles that local residents and children have prepared to use as lanterns to decorate the event area.

Besides lighting up the candles, the event features night canoe rides for ¥1,500, night walking tour for ¥500 and a planetarium show for ¥500.

There’s also Eisa, Hawaiian Hula and live music performances on stage.

The Shirahama Candle Night takes place this Saturday, July 2nd, from 18:30 to 21:00. The event is postponed by one week in case of rain. Admission is free.
