Arashiro 27th in Rio Olympics bicycle road race

Two competitors from Okinawa representing Japan took part in men’s bicycle road race in the Rio Olympics on Aug. 6th.

Yukiya Arashiro finished the race in 6 hours 19 minutes and 43 seconds that earned him the 27th place. The other Okinawan cyclist, Kouhei Uchima, competing in his fist Olympics, had to drop off the race.

Arashiro competed in his first Olympics four years ago in London and placed 48th. At that time, he considered the Olympic race a great personal success. After the race in Rio, Arashiro stated, “I will set my goal for the challenge of the next Olympics in Tokyo. I regret I couldn’t do better here and, from now on, I have a lot of things to do to reach my goal in Tokyo.

Uchima dropped off the race because of a crash with another racer. He said after the race, “I have to concentrate on my training in Europe for my future very seriously.
