Participants wanted for karate event to break Guinness Record

Okinawa Dento Karate Shinkoukai is trying to break the Guinness Book World Record for the number of participants in a karate performance on Oct. 23.

Organizers are planning to try to break the existing record just before the “Day of Karate”, which is Oct. 25. The record try is also one of the World Uchinanchu Festival (26-30 October) related events to promote traditional Okinawa Karate to the world.

Participants are invited not only from Okinawa but also from among Uchinanchu from all over the world participating in the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival. The event needs over 3,000 participants to make it into the Guinness Book of Records.

The present record in the Guinness Book is 809 participants that was recorded on Aug. 3, 2013, in India. On ‘Karate Day” last year there were over 2,000 participants in a similar event on Okinawa, and the recognition by the Guinness is pending. It’s considered to be almost certain to break the existing Guinness World Record.

The event will be held on Kokusai Street in Naha City. Participants are supposed to line up on the street from Kenchomae to Tenbus Naha. Tens of volunteer security guards will be positioned along the street, and official judges from the Guinness Book of World Records will be present to check the performance. All participants are asked to perform “fukyu kata ichi” (普及形1) together, and those who do a different kata will not be counted.

Organizers are now inviting participants from karate schools on Okinawa, from small children taking karate lessons to high school and university students, and adults.
