Elderly school bus driver arrested for hit-and-run

Yonabaru Police arrested a male 73-year-old school bus driver Friday on suspicion of hitting a parked car and then driving away from the scene. No one was injured in the accident.

Police suspect that when the driver of Okinawa Shogaku Junior High School bus was driving from Takagusuku, Nanjo City, towards Yaese around 11:05, he hit a car parked on the street on the city road in Horikawa, Nanjo City, and drove away. The owner of the parked car reported the incident to police, and a police patrol found the bus in Gushiken, Nanjo City. When the patrol stopped the bus, the driver reportedly said that he could not stop because he wanted to go to the restroom. However, he admitted to the charges.

Yonabaru Police say they received two claims of being hit by a school bus, and they are investigating whether the two incidents are connected. According to Okinawa Shogaku Junior High School, there were no students on the bus when the accident occurred.

Okinawa Shogaku Vice-Principal said, “Fortunately there was no student on the bus when the accident occurred, but it was a traffic accident that should not have taken place. We would like to thoroughly review our safe driving management of our school buses.”
