Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga picked up Friday a successor to Vice Governor Mitsuo Ageda, who resigned last month over a scandal, in which he was accused of pressing the Prefecture Board of Education to pass his personal favorites in the teacher recruitment test.

Onaga named 69-year-old Moritake Tomikawa, a policy adviser for Okinawa prefecture, to replace Ageda. Onaga announced his selection of the new Vice Governor at a press conference at the Okinawa Prefectural Office in Naha.

Tomikawa is a former professor at Okinawa International University. He is expected to take his new post as the Vice Governos as soon as early March after the appointment is approved in the Prefecture Assembly.

Onaga is also planning to establish a new policy coordinator post o assist the vice governor with matters concerning the U.S. military bases on Okinawa.
