Hackers deface websites of local companies

Okinawa Prefectural Police Cyber Crime Control Office warned Thursday that there have been many cases of Okinawan business websites being attacked and defaced, prompting the police to urge website owners to update the management software to the latest version for protection.

According to Police, in most of the cases the contents on the company websites were rewritten from “What’s New” pages into contents that criticize Islamic militant groups. Similar incidents have reportedly happened often all over Japan, and nine such incidents were confirmed only on the 6th and 7th of this month on Okinawa. Police are proceeding the investigation from the viewpoint of the cases being against the Unauthorized Computer Access Law.

Most of the damaged websites among the above nine cases were created using “Word Press” software, and there is a possibility that the sites were defaced because of the relatively weak security of the software.

Reportedly, there have been no reports of leaked private information or virus infections. The head of the Cyber Crime Control Office said, “Companies that delegate their websites to other companies to create and maintain should check the sites immediately.”

Police are going to conduct a “cyber security seminar” on 27th and 28th this month aimed at persons who are responsible for the information security in the company. For details please contact to the Okinawa Prefectural Police Cyber Crime Control Office.
