Monorail fare for students of low-income families to be cut to half

Monorail fare for high school students of low-income families on Okinawa will be cut to half from April.

The 2nd board of directors meeting of the “Okinawa Prefectural Conference for Children’s Future” was held on Mach 14th, to decide the execution of the proposed discount fares on the Naha Monorail with cooperation of Okinawa Urban Monorail Co. Officials estimate that at most 500 students will be eligible for the discount tickets.

According to a test calculation by the prefecture, the discount will reduce the annual expense of monorail rides by ¥40,000 per person. The fare will become cheaper than the total annual amount for 6-month student season tickets.

Students in high schools, technical colleges or enrolled in upper secondary courses in Okinawa, and who receive assistance to attend school will be eligible for the discount.

Applicants need to submit the application forms through their schools. Successful applicants can purchase a discount OKICA ticket by showing their admission card and the student card at the monorail station. The cost will be about half of an adult OKICA ticket.
