Naha call center CEO to face prosecutors for unpaid wages

The Naha Labor Standards Inspection Office sent papers resulting from its inspection of Surgery, a call center company in Naha, and its 37-year-old CEO, to the Public Prosecutors Office.

The company is suspected of failing to pay a total of ¥2,149,869 in wages to 19 of its employees between Apr. 1 and May 31, 2016. Instead, they were paid only the minimum wage.

According to the Labor Office, Surgery also did not pay agreed wages for about another 30 employees over a period of 6 to 9 months, and the office estimates that the unpaid wages could total more than ¥10 million.

The company was closed at the end of September 2016 because of its financial difficulties, but it did not file for bankruptcy.

The Naha Labor Office is proceeding to provide relief measures to the unpaid workers under the Program of Replacement Payment of Unpaid Wages.
