Correspondence school planned for Yonaguni

Yonaguni Town and Cabinet Office are reportedly preparing for a plan to build a correspondence upper secondary school on the island.

A demonstration experiment to conduct trial lessons is planned for this summer in cooperation with the Ryukyu University Department of Education. Based on the experiment, a summary of issues will then compiled for the final plan.

Yonaguni Town has already started a public institute where elementary and junior high school students are given lessons using information communication technology. In addition to the correspondence upper secondary school, the town aims to solve the problem of combined classes for more than one grade at the elementary and junior high schools. Classrooms in the new facility will be equipped with a large screen LCD TVs and it has a budget of ¥30 million.

15 to 20 young people leave Yonaguni Island every year at the age of 15 because there is no high school. Yonaguni Mayor Shukichi Hokama says, “There have been many cases when a 15-year-old child leaves the island, the whole family goes together, resulting in depopulation. I expect this could be an effective measure against depopulation.”
