Orion revives “Orion Cider” soda pop for one year

Orion Breweries Ltd., the maker of Orion Beer, is reviving on a limited basis “Orion Cider,” a soda pop that was popular in Okinawa during the 1970’s and 80’s.

Orion Cider will be for sale only in the store of Orion Happy Park within the brewery in Nago City for a limited period of one year. The price is ¥350 per bottle. Those taking the brewery tour will have a chance to taste the cider.

Orion Cider used to be available both in bottles and cans. The bottled version was sold from 1971 to 1981, and the canned one from 1980 to 1988.

The bottled cider was made at the Orion Brewery plant in Nago, but the canned cider was commissioned from a soda maker in the Japanese mainland. As Orion shifted to making more beer, it stopped making the bottled cider in 1981.

The revived Orion Cider is made based on the original recipe, but with less sweetener in a modern style.

58-year-old Akira Tara, the head of the production department at the Orion Beer Nago factory, remembers drinking Orion Cider when he was in a high school. “The revived cider is also very tasty, so I hope many people try to taste it,” Tara said.
