A student is putting together a paper model of a GODAC ocean exploration ship.

GODAC, the Global Oceanographic Data Center, located in Henoko distinguishes itself with its active community outreach programs that include several open house events throughout the year, many of the aimed specifically at children.

During the month of August, when most of Japanese school children are on summer vacation, GODAC is organizing a series of paper craft experience classes on its premises. In the classes, children can make items related to marine research and ocean environment. At some of the classes children can make models ships and sea creatures from cardboard. They can make paper fans and figures using seashells and stones from the beach, and also draw pictures with sand, create images of jellyfish using balloons.

The classes are available from Jul. 15th through Aug. 19 daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the last entry at 4:30 p.m. except on Mondays when GODAC is closed. Admission to the experience classes is free, and no reservation is necessary.

GODAC is managed by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), on commission from its municipal owner of the same name since 2001. GODAC maintains and provides digital archives, various images and other documents about deep-sea. The public facilities are available to foster better understanding of marine science and technology.”
