Staff member of 11th Regional Coast Guard HQ arrested

Tomigusuku Police arrested a male member of the staff of the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters Sunday on suspicion of causing a physical injury.

Police say they arrested 25-year-old Shougo Kawabata, a staff member of the 11th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, on the spot, on suspicion of causing bodily harm on a resident of an apartment in Naha City. According to Tomigusuku Police, Kawabara has not admitted to the charges, but says he was drunk when the incident occurred and claims he does not “remember” what he did.

Kawabata is suspected of having kicked the door of the apartment, causing the door to slam on the man’s face and inflicting a cut on the right side of his face. The incident took place just after midnight on Sunday. Police adds the two are not acquaintances.

The Coast Guard Headquarters issued a statement on the incident, saying, “This is very regrettable. We would like to apologies all residents of Okinawa and Japan.” They said they would punish Kawabata according to their regulations.
