The 16th Annual Okinawa City Craft Fair
The 16th Annual Okinawa City Craft Fair will be held at the Plaza House Shopping Center from Thursday, March 8th to Sunday, March 11th. The fair will take place on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd floor of the shopping center from 10:00~20:00. It’s free to enter.
Seventy-one (71) Okinawan local craft studios, specializing in dyeing, textile production, pottery, lacquerware, Ryukyu glass making, will gather under one venue. This is one of the biggest craft fairs on the island, and your opportunity to find that special handmade gift!
Opening ceremony starts at 10:00 a.m. on March 8th on the 1st floor. On Friday, March 9th, a charity auction will be held (1st floor) starting at 12:00 p.m. Auction items will be donated by participating studios with the auction sales going towards regions still affected by the Great Tohoku Earthquake which took place on March 11th in 2011. Handmade crafts from Iwaki City (from Fukushima Prefecture and one of the most heavily hit cities of the tsunami) will also be on display. Additionally, coinciding with the March 11th anniversary date, dancers from Iwaki City will be perform their local traditional dance known as the Iwaki Jangara Dance. Hula dancers from Iwaki City are also scheduled to perform.
And alongside with their mainland brothers and sisters, Okinawa City’s own Kubota Youth Eisa Group will be rocking their eisa drums at the venue. Performance starts at 11:00a.m.
Craft workshops will be held all 4 days. Workshops include Shiisaa coloring, woodworking, Bingata dyeing, leather work, glass art, and more.
