Nanjo City Festival is rare event

Nanjo Festival takes place only every four years this year being the second ever.

Nanjo city festival scheduled for this weekend at Gusuku Road Park does not get to be routine as the event is held only every four years.

The weekend’s festival is only the second time the festival is held, as Nanjo City itself came to the existence only on Jan. 1, 2006, when the town of Sashiki and villages of Chinen, Ozato and Tamagusuku merged.

As with all festivals on Okinawa, no one needs to leave the event hungry.

The festival programs open at 1 p.m. on Saturday, and a little earlier at 12:10 on Sunday.  The two-day program consists of live music, hula dance, and citizen group performance. Local super hero Ryujin Mabuya makes an appearance on Sunday, as do contestants of Miss International Beauty Pageant.

Fireworks display ends the festival on both days starting 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Admission to the event is free.

The festival takes place at the Gusuku Road Park in Nanjo City.

To get to the Gusuku Road Park, drive south on Okinawa Expressway following signs to Naha Airport. Get off at Haebaru Minami (South) exit and turn left on route 507, and go through Kochinda, and all the way to the T-shape intersection at the end. Turn left onto Route 331, and follow signs to Nanjo City Office. After passing the city office and two schools next to it, turn right, and follow the road until you come to the park.
