A 33-year-old female visitor from Fukuoka driving a rental car hit an unemployed man crossing Hwy 58 in Gusukuma, Urasoe City in the evening of Dec. 1.

Investigators say 78-year-old Mitsuru Taira was crossing the road when he was hit by the rent-a-car, which then crashed into a traffic sign. Taira was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries soon afterwards.

According to Urasoe Police, the car was running from Naha towards Ginowan, when it hit Taira and crashed into the traffic signal.

There were a total of six people in the rental car when the accident took place, of whom four were slightly injured.

The female driver was not injured.

The woman and others in the car were visiting Okinawa on a tour.
