Okinawa Prefecture Police arrested a civilian working on Camp Foster on suspicion of driving drunk, causing and accident and then leaving the scene, Tuesday.
Police say they arrested 46-year-old John Chaney, for allegedly rear-ending a car in Chatan Monday afternoon, and then leaving the scene of the accident without reporting the accident to the police as required by law.
A couple whose card Chaney allegedly rear-ended wrote down the register number of Chaney’s car when he drove away from the scene, and reported it to the police.
The police then went to Chaney’s home where they discovered the damaged car. They also said that Chaney smelled alcohol when they apprehended him leading them to suspect that he may have been under the influence when the accident occurred.
According to police, Chaney denies his involvement, and claims he had stayed home all day on Monday, and had not driven his car.
