Entrance to Shisa Museum is free on Shisa Day.

Hands-on shisa making class is available for ¥1,500, but participation is limited to 50 people.

Free guided tours to Tsuboya area are also conducted.

A free Shisa Exhibition opens its doors Wednesday, Shisa Day, to present the popular Okinawan pottery to tourists and locals alike. The events are held centering on the famous Tsuboya pottery area in Naha City. A discount sale of Shisa will be held at each member store of the Tsuboya Yachimun Association. Fascinating events, such as a Yachimun Shisa making-experience classroom is also on the schedule, although there is a charge of ¥1,500 for this. The Tsuboya Shisa tour of the area takes place simultaneously.

The Tsuboya Pottery Museum will offer free entrance all day Wednesday.  Opening ceremonies for the exhibition take place at 9:30 a.m. in the open space in front of Tsuboya Shisa. Performances such as taiko drums and Okinawan dance are also on tap. For the free 10 & 10:30 a.m. Tsuboya Shisa tours, the meeting point is the entrance to the Tsuboya Pottery Museum.  The staff will explain the history of Shisa, introducing Shisa and pottery studios in the area.

A free Tsuboya dance show begins at 2 p.m., while staff of Tsuboya Pottery Museum takes a walk with participants around the Tsuboya area, the village of pottery, introducing historic relics in Tsuboya.

The Yachimun Shisa making experience class begins at 2 p.m. Participants will create a Shisa’s mask under instructions of pottery craftsmen. Call (098)862-9761 (in Japanese) 10:00~6:00 p.m., except Monday to make a reservation. Registration ends when the number of prospective participants reaches 50 persons.

Discount sales of Tsuboya pottery at Tsuboya Pottery Museum and Yachimun area take place all day. The works of the ceramists who produce Shisa in Okinawa from young men to veterans will be gathered.
