Japan Coast Guard enhances Okinawa operations
Japan Coast Guard, formerly known as the Maritime Safety Agency, has now a new office in Naha tasked with providing security in the area west of Okinawa.
Specifically, the new office is designed to deal with problems around the Senkaku Islands that has been lately the focus of a heated dispute of ownership between Japan and China. Japan that administers the islands says there is no dispute regarding the ownership and that the islands are inherently Japanese territory, while China says the islands, which it calls Diaoyu, have historically been Chinese territory that Japan has annexed illegally.
The new Naha office has five patrol boats in its disposal, and is divided into three subdivisions of administrative, security and rescue, and maritime traffic.
