Man’s body found in Kokuba river

A diver team of the Okinawa Prefectural Police found a man’s body in Kokuba River at the Asahimachi district of Naha City on May 24th. The body was identified as an unemployed man living in Naha.

According to Naha police, there had been a phone call to the police emergency number from a worker in a fishing port near the mouth of Kokuba River on the previous evening reporting that someone was causing trouble at the port.

The police rushed to the scene and saw a man running away, and then jumping into the river and disappearing. The police immediately started searching for the man, and eventually a rescue team from the Coast Guard also joined in. The police dive team finally retrieved the body next day.

Police are still investigating the cause of the man’s death, and whether the body they retrieved is the same person who ran away as the police arrived, and why.
