Ryukyu Glass Exhibition kicks off

Ryukyu glass is colorful and was originally made of recycled glassware using techniques and designs that were developed by local artisans on the island.

The venue in Yaese a bit out of the ordinary, but the Ryukyu Glass Exhibition which gets under way tomorrow is well worth the visit.

The Ryukyu Glass Exhibition will run daily through Sunday, June 9th, except Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. at Nishimui Bijutsu, in Kochinda.  Admission is free.

The raster technique, which makes the surface weld chemicals and produces equivocal peculiar color – the technology of giving glossy metallic coating to glass– is a technique which only Mr. Ikemiyagi has mastered in the Ryukyu glass community. The products made using this technique, including the newest creations, will be exhibited. Everything is also on sale.

Ryukyu glass is entirely hand-made by local craftsmen in the many glass workshops on the island.

Ryukyu Glass is a glass handicraft special to Okinawa Prefecture. Ryukyu Glass began in the postwar days when, because of shortage in glass-making materials, craftsmen used varieties of waste glassware, like bottles of Coca-Cola thrown away from U.S. bases, and produced colorful and unrestricted works. Using reproduced glasses by any means, bubbles are contained into their works.

Usually, glass crafts containing bubbles are regarded as defective works. However, craftsmen of the Ryukyu glass have used bubbles as one of the techniques of expression to describe their beautiful sea. Bubbles in Ryukyu Glass seem like bubbles in the beautiful sea surrounding the Okinawa islands. Nowadays, craftsmen succeed in making colorful and warm glass handicrafts fitting the exotic atmosphere of Okinawa.
