Ceramics Art Exhibition opens next week in Yaese

Yumiko Kinjo’s ceramics are feminine and soft.

Haebaru native Yumiko Kinjo is a ceramist who’s known both within Okinawa and across Japan for her unique ceramics, which go on exhibition next week at Nishimui Bijutsu.

The free exhibition is set for next Friday and Saturday, June 14th and 15th at the gallery in Kochinda district of Yaese.  The gallery is open 11 a.m. ~ 5 p.m. each day except Tuesday.

Kinjo entered Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts in 1986, where she became an assistant of the ceramic art course of the university in 1991. She participated in the young ceramist’s show held in the Urasoe Art Museum in 1994, a prelude to private exhibitions and the group exhibitions performed in big cities, such as Tokyo, Kyoto, and Fukuoka, in 1997.  Returning home to Okinawa, she had a private exhibition in the Ryubo Arts Salon in 2010.

Although works of Okinawan ceramic art are usually rough and manly, the colors and form of her works are more pop and feminine. This time, exhibition sale of her work is carried out in Nishimui Bijutsu. Articles that are part of everyday life, such as plates and mugs, will be exhibited as a line.

To get to Nishimui Bijutsu take Okinawa Expressway south towards Naha Airport. Get off at Kochinda Minami (South) interchange and turn left onto Tsukayama bypass (route 507). Drive towards Kochinda where you turn right on road number 77, and continue another 600 meters until you pass Cosmo gasoline stand on the right. The gallery is right after the gas stand on the right side of the road.
