Jazz Pianist Fumio Karashima joins Ashibina 15th anniversary
Renowned jazz composer and pianist Fumio Karashima is coming to Okinawa Saturday to help Okinawa City Civic Theater Ashibina celebrate its 15th anniversary.
The Fumio Karashima Jazz Trio will provide a concert of various genre, including jazz handed down from Elvin Jones, often known as a jazz drummer’s maestro. Karashima has wrapped his music around the Steinway piano, known around the world as the highest ranking piano. Saturday’s concert will see doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music get under way at 7 p.m.
Advance tickets are ¥2,500, with tickets at the door ¥3,000. Those who bring a copy of Japan Update with them get 10% off at the door. Born in Oita in 1948, Karashima began working with Elvin Jones in 1980 as a member of his Jazz Machine. After six years with Jones, Karashima broke onto the worldwide jazz scene in both the U.S. and Europe, establishing his standing as one of the top jazz pianists in the world. Karashima now has 25 top albums, working not only alone, but with Jack DeJohnette on “Great Time”, as well as creating his classic album version of Moon River, in which he plays a Fazioli piano. He’s co-performed with some of the world’s top drummers, including Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette, recording co-performances with them on albums. He won the 31st Nanri Fumio Award in 2005.
