“The Sculpt method in Ryukyu and Asia exhibition” is the theme of a new, long-term exhibition at the Urasoe Museum.

The exhibition will run at the Urasoe City Museum through December 3^rd, from 9:30 a.m. ~ 5 p.m., with last entry a half-hour before closing.  The museum will remain open until 7 p.m. on Fridays, and is closed on Mondays.

General Admission is ¥150, while college and high school students only pay ¥100.  Entry is free to junior high school and elementary school students, as well as pre-schoolers.

and drawing, in the method of decorating lacquer ware with a pattern. As for a technique to carve, “gold inlaid” is one of the techniques representing the famous Ryukyu lacquer ware. This is the technique of engraving the lacquer ware with lines, applying Japanese lacquer, and inserting gold leaf to form a motif.

The same technique is seen also in China and Southeast Asia. This “carving” mode of expression is also used in the arts and crafts of the Ryukyus.

In this standing exhibition performed in the Urasoe art museum, “to carve” is made the keyword, and various “carving” techniques of the Ryukyus and Asia are introduced. In addition, other items utilizing the “carving” technique are introduced.
