MICE tourists number over 80,000

MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing, Exhibitions) events at Okinawa Convention Center and Bankoku Shinryokan reached 531 in 2012, which was a 9.3% increase from the year before. A total of 85,953 people attended the events, 29.8% more than the year before.

Okinawa Prefecture officials announced the figures on July 24th. They also said that they expect the number of events to rise to 565 with 91,500 people attending in 2013.

In order to promote the MICE stronger, Okinawa Convention Bureau is starting promotion seminars in Sendai, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Matusyama, Fukuoka and Kagoshima. Those local cities have direct flight connections to and from Naha. 120 tour companies are expected to participate in the seminars that are organized between July 25 and mid September this year.

Also, OCVB is trying to attract Tokyo University, Tohoku University and 11 other major Japanese universities to hold MICE event on Okinawa.
