Kume Island showcases art, scenery and products

Kume Island is know for it’s impressive rocks.

A three-day Kume Island Fair gets under way tomorrow morning as the small island creates programs to lure visitors.

160 performers from Kume take to stage Sunday.

Sponsored jointly by the Kume Island Town and the Okinawa Times newspaper, the activities begin at 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday, running until 6 p.m.  Admission is free.  This is the first year the Times has sponsored Kume’s event; the first time four years ago the newspaper sponsored Ie Island, then Ishigaki Island, last year Motobu Town, and now Kume.

The Kume Island Fair actually takes place in Naha City, at the Okinawa Times Building in Kumoji, Naha City. The fair gives visitors the opportunity to see, experience and have a taste of Kume Island. There will

be a corner where visitors can eat and drink some of Kume Island’s homemade products, enjoy scenic panoramas with the tourism panels, and even experience making Kimejima Tsumugi, an island fabric.

On Saturday and Sunday there will also be on stage some 160 singers and dancers from Kume to perform some rare dances. The fair is free, but to see the shows, admission fee ¥2,000 is required.
